Bennett falls short and finishes the Tour Down Under in eighth overall

George Bennett has finished the Tour Down Under in eighth place in the overall classification. The leader of Team Jumbo-Visma was well placed on Willunga Hill, but fell short in battling for the top positions. He crossed the finish line in twenty-fourth place, half a minute behind stage winner Matthew Holmes.

The final stage was coloured by a large leading group, with Team Jumbo-Visma’s Bert-Jan Lindeman. The leaders were given a maximum lead of 3:45. Lindeman dropped back to the peloton in the final, after which Team Jumbo-Visma helped in the chase. On Willunga Hill, the battle for the stage victory broke open, but Bennett had no answer to the accelerations of the other favourites.

"The team was really strong. Not only today but actually the whole week”, George Bennett said. “We didn’t come here for eighth place but that’s what we leave with. Despite the result, it’s been a really enjoyable week with the boys and I’m happy to see how we rode as a team. I learned a lot today for the future and it’s a good launch pad for the season.”

Sports director Addy Engels concurres with his team leader. “The team rode fantastic today, just like it has been all week. We had Bert-Jan in the leading group and in the peloton George was well protected all day. The team supported George halfway through the final climb, but unfortunately he was not strong enough today to compete with the best. This is what it is. Willunga Hill is a fair finish.
