Maarten Wynants became second in the Omloop van het Houtland in Lichtervelde. The 35-year-old rider of Team LottoNL-Jumbo finished behind his fellow escapee Tom Devriendt after a race of 195 kilometres.

With less than 40 kilometres to go, Maarten Wynants attacked with two other riders. “It was a tough race, but I presumed we had a chance”, Wynants explained his attack.

The three escapees stayed ahead and in the end Wynants could still sprint for the victory. “I knew Devriendt is fast, but I took the lead for a moment. Nevertheless, Devriendt could overtake me. It’s a pity that I became second. I was close to my first victory as a pro.”
