Team LottoNL-Jumbo seamlessly survived through snowy Romandie stage

Team LottoNL-Jumbo survived the snow-covered second stage of the Tour de Romandie today. Team leader Primoz Roglic stayed fourth overall in the shortened stage won by Stefan Küng and Fabio Felline remained the leader.

"The team was well ahead and stayed out of trouble," said sports director Grischa Niermann.

The team had two goals today: keeping Roglic and Robert Gesink in front and the sprint with Juanjo Lobato.

"It's upsetting that Juanjo got a flat tyre. He immediately lost his chance and fell back into the group behind."

The second stage was shortened due to heavy snowfall. The first 24 kilometres were skipped and the start was in Aigle. The finish was after 136 kilometres in Bulle. A breakaway drove away early in the stage. The group had space and the peloton began its chase too late.

"I saw the riders after the race and I think this was on the verge of what’s acceptable. A few men were completely smothered," said Niermann. "At the finish, it was two degrees and snowed. They happily agreeded to cut the course, but on the last climb there was snow and water on the road. Tomorrow, it's not a real mountain climb, but a difficult ride. I hope the weather is better again."
