Team LottoNL-Jumbo to train in Austria’s high altitudes again

The riders of Team LottoNL-Jumbo will travel to Küthai, Austria in July for a high alitude training camp, just like last year. There, riders like George Bennett, Danny van Poppel and Jos van Emden will prepare for the second part of the 2018 season.

“We’re looking forward to train in the Kühtai area again”, Head of Performance Mathieu Heijboer said about the area where Bennett finished second in the last stage of Tour of the Alps this Friday. “Last year, we had a very good second part of the season with victories of Lars Boom in the BinchBank Tour and Tour of Britain for example. Victor Campenaerts became European champion time trial. Besides that, riders like Koen Bouwman, Floris De Tier, Antwan Tolhoek and Daan Olivier started the Vuelta in a good shape. This was also due to the high altitude training camp in Austria”, he explained.

In Kühtai, the riders will prepare for the second half of the season. Heijboer: “For the Vuelta a Espana for example. But also for the two races in the United States in August. During the Colorado Classic and Tour of Utah, the riders will ride on high altitude a lot. In Austria, they can train specifically for that.”

Besides that, Innsbruck will host the UCI World Championships Cycling. “We can prepare for the team time trial, but also explore the route of the road race. Bennett for example, will look at the course with great interest”, the trainer said.

The World Championships Cycling will take place between September 22 and 30. On day two, the team time trial is on the programme. It’s sixty kilometres long and mostly flat. With the exception of the four kilometres long climb to Axams, a village known from the 1964 Olympics. The road race will be a war of attrition. The course is 265 kilometres long and counts 5000 altimetres.
