Bram: "I’d started the day capturing the riders’ intense focus at the team bus during their warm-up, which adheres to a strict routine. Even before the team started their time trial, I had to make my way to the finish. At the speed the riders completed their time trial, it was quite a challenge to even get there before they did. I had determined that the team’s arrival was the most important moment of the day for me. If they set the fastest time, I’d have an opportunity to capture not one but eight overjoyed riders and a whole lot of team spirit.

When I got to the finish area, I made my way through the dense crowds. A television screen near the finish line showed the Team Jumbo-Visma riders just completing the final kilometer of the course. I then ran to the stretch of road immediately beyond the finish line, still without knowing the final result. Judging by the riders’ primal screams and delirious joy when they came to a stop, it was a safe guess that the team had just seized their second victory of the weekend. The next moments that passed were beautifully chaotic. Riders dropped to the ground and embraced each other. George Bennett tried to answer some questions for the press but could hardly speak a word from utter exhaustion. Dylan Groenewegen finished a bit later than the first five riders and got a warm welcome from Wout van Aert."

"In the midst of this chaos and quickly passing moments, the challenge for me personally was to stay focused. Whilst I was making my way past fellow photographers that were all on the same mission, this moment caught my attention: team captain Tony Martin embraces Norwegian strongman Amund Grøndahl Jansen. In Amund’s visor’s reflection, Mike Teunissen wearing the yellow jersey is clearly visible in the middle of the journalists surrounding him. At this point, Mike knows he’ll be wearing the maillot jaune for yet another day. Left of him, the stage that’ll soon host eight Team Jumbo-Visma riders can be seen. This photo perfectly summarizes last year’s Tour de France’s opening weekend: it shows both the yellow jersey and the team’s spirit."

Amund: "I hadn’t taken my helmet off yet when this photo was taken, so it must have been very shortly after I crossed the finish line. I’d already heard over the radio that we’d won the stage. Of course I was very happy with the result, but I had expected more of my own contribution, having been dropped before the finish line. This felt a bit strange. Ten minutes earlier, I was disappointed in myself. But then all of a sudden I had won a Tour de France stage. It was quite bizarre. Only later did I fully realize what a fantastic weekend this had been. This photo is a nice memory of that."
