In pictures: the first successful week of La Vuelta

The opening week of La Vuelta is in the books. The race began in Italy with a perfect start as Jonas Vingegaard won the second stage. The peloton then crossed France and Andorra on its way to Spain, where the Dane impressed once again by taking a solo victory in stage nine. Check out the best photos below!

Stages 1–3: A red-tinted opening weekend in Italy

The Vuelta kicked off in Turin, Italy, where the black-and-yellow squad immediately set the tone for a successful week. In the second stage, Jonas Vingegaard struck early, beating his rivals in an uphill sprint. As a reward, the Dane also claimed the leader’s jersey in the general classification.

Stages 4–6: High speed through France on the way to Spanish soil

After a stop in France, where the sprinters battled for stage honours, the peloton headed towards Spain. On day five the team time trial was on the programme, with the black-and-yellow train securing an impressive second place. But there was little time to recover, as stage six led into Andorra – and climbing there is always guaranteed.

Stages 7–9: Vingegaard carries his strong form and solos to a second stage win

From the mountains of Andorra, the peloton returned to Spain for another tough weekend featuring two summit finishes. In the first mountain stage Vingegaard stayed sharp, but on Sunday he struck hard himself. On the final climb, the 28-year-old attacked early and soloed to the victory.
