Media overview: Simon Yates conquered the front pages

Simon Yates miraculously claimed victory in the Giro d’Italia this past weekend. In an impressive display, he broke away from the competition on Saturday on the Colle delle Finestre. With help from a well-positioned Wout van Aert, Yates managed to take over the lead in the general classification. On Sunday, Team Visma | Lease a Bike lined up at the start in special jerseys, with Yates wearing la maglia rosa. The overall victory in the Giro d’Italia did not go unnoticed, the Brit appeared on several front pages. See the media overview below.

La Gazzetta dello Sport

In Italy, Yates appeared on the front page of 'La Gazzetta dello Sport'. The newspaper refers to the emotions after the finish and the stop at the Pope at the start of the final stage in Rome. He was presented with a pink Team Visma | Lease a Bike jersey, signed by the overall winner, and briefly shook hands with the winners of all the classification jerseys.

The Guardian

Yates’ overall victory did not go unnoticed in his home country either. He is prominently featured on the front page of 'The Guardian'. The newspaper’s website also highlights the remarkable overall win with several dedicated articles: ''Britain’s Simon Yates seals Giro d’Italia triumph and banishes pain of 2018'', ''Giro d’Italia winner Simon Yates hails ‘huge moment in my career’'' and ''Simon Yates rides away with improbable prize of Giro d’Italia while rivals lose plot.''

In Belgium, Yates and his teammates were featured in several newspapers. 'Het Nieuwsblad' called it “a dream weekend for Team Visma | Lease a Bike” on its front page of the sports section. 'Het Laatste Nieuws' praised Van Aert for his role in the team’s victory: “Yates wins the Giro and has Van Aert to thank for it.” 'Het Nieuwsblad' also highlighted the Belgian star in its newspaper: “the pink coup for Van Aert & co.

Dutch media

In the home country of Team Visma | Lease a Bike, the victory is also receiving plenty of attention. Yates was pictured on the front page of 'Het Parool'. On the websites of national newspapers such as 'de Volkskrant', 'De Telegraaf', 'Trouw', and 'NRC', the team’s triumph was widely covered. 'NRC', for instance, spoke of a surprise: “With Simon Yates’ power grab, the Giro d’Italia ends in the spirit of this edition: with a stunning surprise.”

The overall victory didn't go unnoticed in France or the United States either.
