Nuis to miss National Single Distance Championships due to illness

Kjeld Nuis will miss the National Single Distance Championships at Thialf Heerenveen this upcoming weekend. The reign Olympic and Dutch champion at 1,000 and 1,500 meters is not fully recovered from his fever.

Nuis had been sick the last couple of days, he lost significant weight during his illness and is still suffering from sinusitis. According to the medical team of Team Jumbo Visma, it would be irresponsible for Nuis to start.

Last year, the 30-year-old speed skater of Team Jumbo-Visma became Dutch champion in the men's 1,000- and 1,500-meter races at Thialf. In the last tournament of the season, the World Cup Final in Salt Lake City, he set a world record at 1,000 and 1,500 meters.

This season Nuis has won three gold medals so far. He won the men’s 1,500-meter race at the ISU World Cup in Minsk, Belarus. He also seized gold in the men’s Team Sprint in Minsk and Tomaszów Mazowiecki, Poland.
