Team Visma | Lease a Bike expands technical skills programme

Team Visma | Lease a Bike is taking the next step in the development of its riders by further strengthening the technical coaching available to riders within its WorldTour, Women’s, Development and Junior Team. The team is expanding its collaboration with bike handling specialist Maikel Govaarts, whose expertise will play an important role in preparing riders for the high demands of modern professional cycling.

Govaarts has already been active within Team Visma | Lease a Bike, supporting riders at different levels. As part of the expanded programme, he will now be involved in a greater number of training activities throughout the season.

The initiative reflects the team's commitment to developing complete athletes, starting from junior level, combining physical performance with the technical skills required to compete safely and effectively in today's increasingly demanding racing environment.

"Training methods, equipment and performance levels continue to evolve, which means technical skills become even more important. Riders need to be able to handle their bike with confidence and precision in every race situation."

For young riders entering the sport through different pathways, these skills can be especially valuable. While many athletes possess exceptional physical talent, not all arrive with the same level of cycling-specific experience. Through a structured and progressive approach, Team Visma | Lease a Bike aims to ensure every rider develops the technical foundations needed to succeed at the highest level.

As part of the expanded collaboration, Govaarts will lead dedicated training sessions during team camps where riders will work in small groups, allowing for focused coaching and individual feedback. Riders wanting additional support, will also receive personalised one-on-one guidance.

“We started implementing technical trainings about seven years ago. By now, we absolutely see the importance of this type of trainings. That’s why we decided to make it a standard element in our training schedule”, says Robbert de Groot. “By investing in technical rider development from an early stage, Team Visma | Lease a Bike continues to build an environment in which young talents can develop every aspect of their performance and prepare themselves for a successful career in professional cycling.”
