Vingegaard, Roglic and Kuss look ahead to Vuelta a España

Vingegaard, Roglic and Kuss look ahead to Vuelta a España

The 78th edition of the Tour of Spain starts on Saturday. Jonas Vingegaard, Primoz Roglic and Sepp Kuss are looking ahead to the final grand tour on the cycling calendar.

After Roglic's final victory at the Tour of Italy and Vingegaard's final victory at the Tour de France, a hungry Team Jumbo-Visma will head into the year's last grand tour. The Dutch outfit could become the first team to win all three major tours in one season. "We need each other to achieve our ultimate goal”, Vingegaard says.

The Tour of Spain begins on 26 August with a team time trial of around 15 kilometres in the streets of Barcelona. After arriving in Spain, the Jumbo-Visma riders explored the course on their time-trial bikes. "It's a very technical course”, Vingegaard says. "We have the riders for this kind of work. I'm looking forward to opening with a team time trial and hopefully getting a good result immediately.”

After the time trial, the peloton will head straight into the mountains on the Spanish-French border. "Every year, the Vuelta has spectacular stages”, Roglic says. "They usually contain intense racing from the start. In this tour, riders don't often wait until the last week to attack, which makes it more interesting”, the Slovenian says.

"It's a tough edition with stages that should suit us”, Vingegaard continues. "We will have to see how my form is in the first week. It's always hard to predict how your legs will feel after rest. I feel good now and am curious how my body will react in the first stages.”

Vingegaard and Roglic will start as co-leaders. "It's not the first time we start a stage race as teammates”, the Dane says. "It has worked well with overall victories in the Tour of Spain and the Critérium du Dauphiné. We proved there that we have a good working relationship. We are both looking forward to it.”

"We have a strong selection”, Roglic continues. "It is too early to say who will be the team’s absolute leader. The goal is to have a Jumbo-Visma rider on the podium in Madrid. The form and the legs will determine who will be the leader in the final of the race."

The two leaders can once again count on Superman Kuss. The 28-year-old American is facing his third grand tour of the season. Kuss has recovered well from his heavy crash in the final week of the last Tour de France. "It's never nice to crash, but I recovered well", he says. "To do three grand tours in one season is unique and special, but I'm certainly not going to do it every year (laughs). It will be a physical challenge, but with my experience at the grand tours, I know when my body needs a rest. I wouldn't be here if the team and I didn't think I could be of value. I'm ready, and I'm looking forward to helping Jonas and Primoz.”
