Barré finishes third in final stage and general classification at Tour of Guangxi
Louis Barré delivered a strong performance in the challenging, decisive final stage of the Tour of Guangxi. The 26-year-old Frenchman from Team Visma | Lease a Bike battled for both the stage win and the overall victory. He finished third, securing a place on the final podium. Jarno Widar claimed both the stage win and the overall title.
The final WorldTour race of the season started in Yizhou. After an opening section over rolling roads, the riders faced a tough finale. The final climb to Nongla proved decisive in the queen stage. Five breakaway riders quickly built a lead of several minutes over the peloton after the start.
The teams with general classification ambitions kept the breakaway within reach. The escapees were eventually caught with four kilometers remaining. From there, everything came down to the final climb to Nongla. Barré, Team Visma | Lease a Bike’s leader for the general classification, was expertly guided into position by his teammates at the right moment.
On the steep final climb, Rémy Rochas and Peter Øxenberg launched the first attacks. The favorites soon joined the action at the front. When Barré accelerated strongly, only Tom Pidcock and Widar could follow his pace. Eventually, Barré had to let his two rivals go. Widar proved to be the strongest, claiming both the stage win and the overall title. Barré finished third and earned a place on the final podium.
"it was great to be back competing for the win"
“I felt strong,” Barré said afterwards. “The team gave me the confidence to go all in. Loe (van Belle) and Niklas (Behrens) made sure I was well positioned throughout the day. In the finale, I decided to make my move with 600 meters to go. When Widar and Pidcock passed me, unfortunately, I just couldn’t quite stay with them. Looking back, I’m happy with this result. I missed several weeks because of an injury, so it was great to be back competing for the win.”
In his first season with Team Visma | Lease a Bike, Barré claimed two victories and secured several additional podium finishes. He reflected on his first year in yellow and black: “I gained more and more confidence as the season progressed,” he said. “The team gives me the freedom to develop, and I feel at home in this environment. I had my share of bad luck early in the season, but then I enjoyed a good summer. My first professional wins in Poland and Germany felt great. I wanted to finish the season here on a positive note, and I managed to do that. I’m heading into the winter highly motivated.”
