Kelderman limits damage in individual time trial at Tour de Suisse
The riders of Team Visma | Lease a Bike were unable to challenge for the top positions in the Tour de Suisse time trial. Wilco Kelderman did manage to retain his eighth place in the general classification. The stage victory went to Tadej Pogačar.
The fourth day of the Tour de Suisse was all about the individual time trial. The riders faced a 23.7-kilometer course that was mostly flat. Before the time trial, Kelderman was eighth in the general classification, 4 minutes and 44 seconds behind GC leader Pogačar.
It was Mathieu van der Poel who set a fast benchmark time. It later turned out that only Pogačar was able to narrowly improve on that mark. Kelderman was the first Team Visma | Lease a Bike rider to finish. The former Dutch time trial champion finished 23rd. He will start tomorrow’s tough final stage in eighth place overall.
Sports director Gaëtan Pons looks back on the time trial and is already looking ahead to Sunday’s queen stage: “Wilco rode a good time trial and defended his place in the top ten,” he says. “Our guys gave a lot yesterday, and that was noticeable in today’s time trial. Tomorrow will be the most important day of the week. We will do everything we can to keep our place in the top ten of the general classification. In addition, we definitely want to show ourselves again tomorrow.”
