Kooij just off the podium in second stage of the Tour of Hungary

Olav Kooij has finished fourth in the second stage of the Tour of Hungary. In a chaotic final, the 19-year-old sprinter of Team Jumbo-Visma was well-supported by his teammates; Kooij sprinted just outside the podium places.

The rainy 183 kilometre stage took the riders from the start town of Balatonfüred to the finish town of Nagykanizsa. Seven riders made the effort to be in the breakaway of the day. The last three remaining riders saw their attempt fail at a bit more than two kilometres from the finish. Michel Hessman was responsible for much of the chase.

In the final kilometres nervousness prevailed in the peloton. The Team Jumbo-Visma riders were well placed in front and it was Mike Teunissen again who brought Kooij in perfect position for the final hundreds of metres. Kooij started his sprint early, but he couldn’t prevent three riders from catching up with him.

"Unfortunately it was just not enough for the victory."

The young Dutchman was disappointed that he came up just short. “The plan was to go for a sprint again today. After Michel had controlled the early breakaway, Mike and I were dropped by Rick Pluimers and Mick van Dijke. Mike then started the sprint for me. At two hundred metres from the finish I decided to go for the sprint. Unfortunately it was just not enough for the victory”, said Kooij.
