Kraak attacks in third stage Vuelta

Kraak attacks in third stage Vuelta

Amber Kraak has shown her strength in the third stage of the Ceratizit Challenge by la Vuelta. The Team Jumbo-Visma rider attacked 25 kilometres from the finish line and maintained the lead for several kilometres. She finished just outside the top ten.

Except for two climbs, the third stage was primarily flat. On the first climb, Anouska Koster earned four points in the QOM classification.

With around forty kilometres remaining, a front group formed that included Amber Kraak. Several riders tried to escape, but they were caught quickly. Twenty-five kilometres before the finish, Kraak also attacked. At that point, the pace in the peloton practically halted, allowing the 28-year-old Dutch rider to extend her lead to nearly thirty seconds. She joined leader Grace Brown and rode in front for several kilometres.

After both leaders had been caught, Kraak continued to attack. Two riders eventually managed to stay ahead. In the sprint for third place, Kraak finished 12th.

"I attacked often today and that worked out well several times"

Amber Kraak

"I have gained another great experience", Kraak concluded. "I attacked often today and that worked out well several times. When it came down to it, I wasn't strong enough. I still lack the expertise to utilise my energy at precisely the right moments. Additionally, sprinting in a small group is something I haven't done frequently. I was trapped and couldn't go flat out, so I also learned a thing or two in that area."

Kraak is pleased with her team's teamwork today. "We were very alert as a team and controlled the race, especially in the first part of the race. We executed our plan well."
