Labecki unable to win Women's Tour opening stage due to crash in final kilometre

Coryn Labecki crashed in the final kilometre of the opening stage of the British Women's Tour. Together with teammate Karlijn Swinkels, the American rider crashed in a slippery corner after several riders had slipped in front of her.

Not much happened in the stage’s opening phase. The riders with breakaway ambitions did not succeed in getting away from the peloton. Team Jumbo-Visma showed up in the front a few times but could not get away.

With thirty kilometres to go, the stage was stopped for a while because an ambulance had to pass the riders. Just before this break, British rider Danielle Shrosbree broke away from the peloton. She managed to take a two-minute lead, but at ten kilometres from the finish, she was caught.

In the run-up to the sprint, her teammates kept Labecki at the front. The American seemed to be in a good position in Swinkels’ wheel until the crash ruined her chances. Labecki and Swinkels are doing reasonably well and are expected to get back on their bikes on Tuesday.

"The drive to win was evident"

Carmen Small

Race coach Carmen Small spoke some encouraging words about her team. "The riders did well today. They performed exactly what we discussed in yesterday’s meeting, which is very good for us as coaches to see. We were unlucky with the crash in the last kilometre. We knew that this part of the course was dangerous and we were prepared for it, but we wanted to be at the front at this point. The girls showed courage. The drive to win was evident, but unfortunately, Karlijn and Coryn crashed. Luckily the damage is not too bad and tomorrow the five of us can start again. We want to be back in the race for the win.”
