Insightful edition of Omloop het Nieuwsblad for young Team Visma | Lease a Bike Women

Team Visma | Lease a Bike Women, starting with a relatively young squad, did not play a leading role in the finale of the 21st edition of Omloop het Nieuwsblad. Daniek Hengeveld showed her strengths on the climbs but ultimately could not keep up with the favorites. Demi Vollering won the Belgian spring classic.

In the Belgian spring classic, where Team Visma | Lease a Bike Women had to miss Rosita Reijnhout due to illness, four riders formed the traditional early breakaway. However, the break was caught before the finale thanks to the controlling work of the peloton, leaving the race to build up to the decisive climbs.

On the penultimate climb, the Muur van Geraardsbergen, the race completely exploded. Vollering launched an attack, and the peloton fragmented. Hengeveld showed her qualities and climbed with the best, eventually finishing in thirteenth place. Vollering proved to be the strongest in Ninove.

"I felt good and I’m pleased with how the season has started"

Daniek Hengeveld

“It was a very hectic day,” reflects Hengeveld, who rides for the Dutch team this season. “I went into the race aggressively and had a fun day. I felt good and I’m pleased with how the season has started, but I hope to be a bit stronger at Strade Bianche next week.”

Sports director Jos van Emden is also satisfied with today’s race: “They did really well. Daniek was in the finale where she needed to be and showed her best today. Katharina also delivered a fantastic performance in her first cobbled classic.”
