Laporte fourth in Famenne Ardenne Classic

Laporte fourth in Famenne Ardenne Classic

Christophe Laporte has finished fourth in the Famenne Ardenne Classic. The European champion missed out on a podium in the sprint of a reduced peloton. The victory went to local hero Arnaud De Lie.

In the Famenne Ardenne Classic, Team Jumbo-Visma was on the attack. Laporte and Dylan van Baarle tried to escape, but the sprinters' teams did not allow a breakaway. As a result, a reduced peloton reached the finish line. De Lie was untouchable in the sprint despite equipment failure in the final metres. Behind him, Laporte had to settle for fourth place.

Sports director Arthur van Dongen had seen a solid collective performance from his men. "We rode attractively, as we wanted to. We wanted to make a difference by anticipating the many breakaways. We did that well. While we did not win today, I am proud of how our riders carried out our plans. We could have chosen to do nothing and wait for the sprint, but we wanted to give as many riders as possible the chance to do something.”

"I am happy with our team's performance today"

Two talents of the Jumbo-Visma Development Team got their chance at the highest level. 19-year-old American Colby Simmons and 20-year-old Norwegian Per Strand Hagenes - who will join the WorldTour team next year - made a strong impression. "With Loe (van Belle) dropping out, Colby was called up at the last minute”, Van Dongen said. "He rode well today. Per also proved that he is very good at this type of course and can compete with the best here. I am happy with our team's performance today.”
