After an eight-rider breakaway was caught, the race broke open. At fifty kilometres from the finish, the echelon alarm rang out. Team Jumbo-Visma was in the front with five men. This depleted group would have sprinted in Hajdúszoboszló if it weren't for a big crash in the front of the group in the last kilometre.

It brought three Team Jumbo-Visma riders down. David Dekker and Mick van Dijke reached the finish after the crash. Unfortunately, the impact meant an early end to the Tour of Hungary for classification leader Kooij.

Team manager Robert Wagner was one of the first to arrive at the unfortunate Kooij. "Olav has a deep cut on the inside of his calf, which has been stitched. Other than that, he seems okay, which he confirmed."

Until the crash, everything seemed to be going well for Team Jumbo-Visma. "Everything went according to plan. Owen Geleijn helped control the race in the beginning. Then we were well in front. We knew the peloton would break into echelons. When that happened, we were with five men, which was very strong of them. Everything went well until 600 metres from the line. When someone fell in front of them, our riders had nowhere to go. Mick and David were also there. They were fortunate because it could have ended differently. Now we're going to reset and see what's left for the next few days", the German sports director said.
