Markus just misses out on podium in Liège-Bastogne-Liège Femmes

Riejanne Markus finished fourth in Liège-Bastogne-Liège. In a race for third place, the Dutch champion had to defeat Reusser. Vollering won the race.

The start of Liège-Bastogne-Liège, traditionally the last spring classic, was at 8.40 in the morning. Between the start in Bastogne and the finish in Liège, the riders had to cover about 142 kilometres. At 75 kilometres, the race broke open on climbing the Côte de Stockeu. Anna Henderson accelerated, along with Reusser, Spratt, Niewiadoma and Peperkamp. For a long time, the five held a one-minute advantage. Thirty kilometres from the finish, Henderson had to let go. At that moment, Markus jumped to the front with her fellow favourites.

Towards the final climb, the Rôche-aux-Faucons' Reusser went solo. Markus struggled at times to keep up with Vollering and Longo Borghini, among others. The latter two eventually proved the strongest riders and sprinted for the win. Markus finished fourth after a sprint for third place, with Reusser in the chasing group.

"This was the best possible result today"

Riejanne Markus

"I am very proud of this performance. Although a podium place would have been nice to round off the spring", Markus said. "I can live with that. Looking back, this was the best possible result today. The race was both beautiful and difficult. There were five new slopes added to the women's course. Those extra slopes made it extremely tough and a great experience. I think it's one of the most beautiful classics on the calendar."

Sports director Lieselot Decroix saw an outstanding team effort. "Today, I thought it was one of our best team performances. We planned to anticipate early in the race, and Anna did a great job. We had several riders in the lead well into the final. Riejanne missed out on the podium. But she rode amazingly well. She can be proud of her race."
