Oudeman finishes tenth in the Vuelta a Burgos after a strong performance in the final stage

Thanks to a strong performance in the final stage of the Vuelta a Burgos, Maud Oudeman has secured tenth place in the general classification. In the gruelling stage to Lagunas de Neila, the 22-year-old from Nijmegen crossed the finish line in twelfth place.

With three categorised climbs and a brutal finish atop Lagunas de Neila, all the ingredients were in place for a spectacular finale to the Spanish stage race. Two riders broke away early on and built up a maximum lead of almost seven minutes.

With just over twenty kilometres to go, Rosita Reijnhout signalled the start of the final sprint. The youngster broke away from the peloton alongside Titia Ryo and set off in pursuit of the leaders. The pair caught one of the leaders, but just before they could catch the other, Reijnhout and Ryo were reeled back in by the peloton.

On the slopes of the Lagunas de Neila, it was up to the women in the general classification to make their mark. Oudeman and Katharina Sadnik managed to stay with the elite group for a long time, but had to let go when Evita Muzic and Yara Kastelijn stepped up the pace.

"Maud can look back on a very good Vuelta a Burgos."

Jan Boven

Oudeman, however, did not give up, fought to the end and, with a twelfth-place finish, secured her tenth spot in the general classification. "For Maud personally, it’s a shame she just missed out on winning the white jersey, but all in all she can look back on a very good Vuelta a Burgos", sports director Jan Boven said.

"In the absence of our leading riders, these are fantastic opportunities. Maud has shown here that she can be a good cyclist even in a slightly different role. She had hoped for a bit more herself, but this was a fair climb and you end up where you belong,” said Boven, who also saw Reijnhout and Sadnik at the front. “The girls rode a great final."

After four days of racing in northern Spain, Boven is primarily pleased with Team Visma | Lease a Bike’s performance. "I’m left with a positive feeling about this week. With a great young group, we tried to get the most out of it, and when you ultimately achieve four top-ten finishes, I think we can certainly be satisfied."
