Second stage victory for Vos in La Vuelta Femenina

Second stage victory for Vos in La Vuelta Femenina

Marianne Vos has impressively claimed victory in the seventh stage in La Vuelta Femenina. The rider of Team Visma | Lease a Bike outsprinted everyone on the steep final climb and took her second win of this race. Riejanne Markus finished seventh and maintained her third place in the general classification.

Vos clearly had her sights set on this stage, as her teammates took control early in the race. As the wind increasingly affected the race, the peloton split into several groups. Vos and Markus were alert and positioned themselves in the front group. This group, consisting of around thirty riders, ultimately competed for the stage win.

On the steep final climb, Vos attacked early and sprinted powerfully to her 253rd career victory. "When the girls do so much work for you, you also want to finish it off," Vos said. "I knew: if I'm in the front and have good legs, it's a finish that should suit me. Yet, there is a certain tension because it’s a tough finish and it's the seventh day. I tried to follow Kristen (Faulkner) and Elisa (Longo Borghini) and felt it would hurt. At 200 meters I put an extra acceleration and saw that no one could follow."

"Today was a tough day, maybe even tougher than we thought."

Rutger Tijssen

Sports director Rutger Tijssen is extremely pleased with the team's performance. "Today was a tough day, maybe even tougher than we thought. We had to control quite early and had seen that at a certain point echelons could form. Riejanne and Marianne were in the first group and then you have to be a bit lucky that nothing major happens. “The way Marianne ultimately finishes It off is fantastic.”

According to Tijssen, the whole team made a strong impression. "One of our goals was to be visible, and it's great to see that we’re succeeding. The riders are controlling, taking charge and positioning Marianne and Riejanne well each time. Riejanne has done well in the overall standings today and has extended her lead over fourth place. Tomorrow we will do everything we can to maintain her third position."
