Strong Gloag second in queen stage of Tour of Britain

Strong Gloag second in queen stage of Tour of Britain

Thomas Gloag finished second in the fifth stage of the Tour of Britain. In the mountain stage ending on The Tumble, the 23-year-old Briton was only beaten by Remco Evenepoel in the sprint. Matthew Brennan also impressed once again on the climbs. The 20-year-old crossed the line thirty seconds later in seventeenth place.

The Tour of Britain peloton arrived in Wales for the final weekend of the six-day stage race. The Tumble, which had to be climbed twice, proved decisive in the penultimate stage. The breakaway of the day went clear after around thirty kilometres, but the escapees were given little breathing space.

On the first of two ascents of The Tumble, the peloton was already heavily reduced. Thanks to strong preparatory work from their teammates, both Gloag and Brennan were well placed there. As the race approached the final climb, the last escapees were reeled in. A select group of favourites, including Gloag and a strong Brennan, then battled for the stage win.

In the closing kilometres, Gloag responded several times to attacks from Evenepoel and Thymen Arensman. Despite repeated efforts, no one managed to break clear. In the sprint, Gloag came up strongly but was unable to overtake Evenepoel. Brennan finished half a minute behind the winner in seventeenth place.

"I’m very satisfied with my performance today"

“I’m very satisfied with my performance today,” Gloag said afterwards. “This season hasn’t gone smoothly so far. I’ve been searching for the right feeling for quite a while, but I’m glad to have found it again and to be able to show myself in finales. The team made sure Matthew and I were well positioned all day. I gave everything I had today but just fell short of beating Remco. It’s encouraging to come so close to a victory in my home race.”
