Strong performance by Team Visma | Lease a Bike in Gent-Wevelgem

Team Visma | Lease a Bike can look back on the thirteenth edition of Gent-Wevelgem with a good feeling. Lieke Nooijen was part of the early breakaway and Linda Riedmann and Sophie von Berswordt were able to compete with the best in the final. Lorena Wiebes eventually proved to be the fastest in the bunch sprint.

Without the not entirely fit Fem van Empel, the peloton headed to Wevelgem for a 171 kilometer ride. Nooijen went on the attack early in the race and got a maximum lead of seven minutes with her breakaway companions. However, that lead vanished when the peloton increased the pace on De Moeren.

On the second climb of the Kemmelberg, Lotte Kopecky caused a split in the peloton. The world champion got seven riders with her, but due to a lack of cooperation in the chasing group, which included Van Berswordt and Riedmann, returned to the front.

A bunch sprint followed, in which Wiebes was the fastest. Riedmann sprinted to twelfth place. "Considering all the big names that were competing, this was the highest possible result," Riedmann said. "When Sophie and I returned to the front group, we had agreed that Sophie would respond to the attacks and I would focus on the sprint. That went pretty well."

Race coach Jan Boven also saw a good team at work. "We can certainly be satisfied with this result. When we found out this morning that Fem wouldn't be participating, it was naturally a setback. We had to regroup and come up with a new plan. Lieke was in the leading group for a long time and Sophie and Linda rode a nice finale. For both of them this is their best result at this level, so they can be very satisfied with that."
