Team Jumbo-Visma survives hectic final in Catalunya

Team Jumbo-Visma has come through the fifth stage of the Volta a Catalunya well. In the last part, Rohan Dennis made sure Sam Oomen didn’t get into trouble.

Three riders escaped from the peloton at the foot of the first and only categorised climb of the day. The trio built up a maximum lead of five minutes but was caught by a hungry peloton at 20 kilometres from the finish line.

Several riders tried to do everything they could to prevent a bunch sprint, but Dennis didn’t want any of that. The Australian of Team Jumbo-Visma rode hard at the front and delivered Oomen in a perfect position. One and a half kilometres from the finish, he made way for the sprinters.

"We came through the day well", said sports director Marc Reef, who didn’t see David Dekker finish in the front group. "If David had been in top shape, he would have battled for the win here, but unfortunately he had to let the peloton go in the final. This week is a good investment for him to take another step towards the next period."
