Three Jumbo-Visma riders in the top twenty in the third stage of Coppi e Bartali

Three Jumbo-Visma riders in the top twenty in the third stage of Coppi e Bartali

In the third stage of the International Cycling Week, Coppi e Bartali, Johannes Staune-Mittet, Tijmen Graat and Milan Vader all finished in the top twenty. During the hilly stage, the trio stayed in a small group and rode behind a group of three for the places of honour.

The third day of the Italian stage race started badly for Team Jumbo-Visma when Tom Gloag crashed shortly after the start. The unfortunate Brit was taken to hospital with a shin injury.

The focal point of the 140-kilometre stage was the ascent of Monte Cavallo, which is partly dirt and partly cobbled. The climb to Tessello, however, caused the final breakaway. Three riders escaped, but they could not be caught. At the Velodrome in Forlí, Vader sprinted to eighth place. Staune-Mittet and Graat also finished in the top twenty.

"It is impressive to see this talented team competing at the highest level"

Robert Wagner

Sports director Robert Wagner saw his team at the front throughout the stage. "Today was another challenging stage, just like the first two. The men rode well. They fought for what they were worth. We suffered a big blow at the beginning when Tom dropped out. But we kept our heads up and quickly picked up the pace. It was a tough race all day, but on the last climb, it broke open completely. The three strongest riders got away. Unfortunately, our guys couldn't keep up. Johannes, Tijmen and Vader managed to stay in the group behind. It is impressive to see this talented team competing at the highest level. This week, we are strong at both the performance and the mental side. We, the team management, are happy with that.”
