Van Belle sprints to eighth place on stage four of Tour of Guangxi

Loe van Belle finished eighth on the fourth stage of the Tour of Guangxi. The Dutch rider of Team Visma | Lease a Bike sprinted to a top-ten finish in a hectic finale. Paul Magnier took the stage victory.

The fourth stage took the peloton from Bama to Tian'e and featured a challenging course with around 2,700 meters of climbing. Four riders broke away early in the race and built up a lead of more than two minutes, while the peloton kept the race under control for much of the day.

Despite the hilly terrain, the expected tough race never materialized. Team Visma | Lease a Bike therefore decided to take the initiative and sent Louis Barré on the attack. With around 30 kilometers remaining, he and Kevin Vauquelin managed to bridge across to the breakaway. However, the peloton responded and eventually brought the attackers back.

"All in all, we can look back on a decent day."

DS Gaëtan Pons

"The race unfolded differently than we had expected", sports director Gaëtan Pons explained. "We anticipated a really hard race, but in the end, everything remained fairly controlled. That's why we decided to make the race harder ourselves and send Louis on the attack. Fabio had already been dropped on the climbs, so we wanted to give it a try and have no regrets afterward."

In the finale, the peloton headed toward a bunch sprint. A major crash in the final corner caused chaos, but Van Belle managed to sprint to eighth place. Magnier ultimately proved to be the fastest.

"All in all, we can look back on a decent day", Pons concluded. "We still have opportunities in the general classification, and with Loe, we've secured another solid top-ten finish. Tomorrow, we'll try to seize our opportunities again with Fabio and hopefully achieve a good result."
