Veenhoven misses out on podium spot at Omloop van het Hageland

Nienke Veenhoven finished fourth at Omloop van het Hageland. The 21-year-old sprinter for Team Visma | Lease a Bike Women had to settle for three riders ahead of her in the bunch sprint, including winner Charlotte Kool.

A day after Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, Team Visma | Lease a Bike Women lined up for Omloop van het Hageland. In the eighteenth edition of this race in Flemish Brabant, the riders faced 141 kilometers featuring several cobbled sections and hills. Viktória Chladoňová, Daniek Hengeveld, Katharina Sadnik, Imogen Wolff, and Veenhoven represented the yellow-and-black squad.

The race was shaped by an early breakaway of three riders: Marta Lach, Karlijn Swinkels, and Flora Perkins. The trio held out for a long time against the chasing peloton, where the riders of Team Visma | Lease a Bike raced attentively. The leaders were only caught in the final kilometers, after which the peloton prepared for a bunch sprint. In that sprint, Veenhoven came up just short of a podium finish.

“From the start, we were well positioned in the race,” Veenhoven reflected. “The breakaway never gained a big advantage, but they still managed to stay away for a long time. In the finale, my teammates did a great job. Among others, Viktória and Katharina rode strong pulls at the front to close the gap. Daniek and Imogen made sure I was well positioned going into the sprint. In the sprint, I may have been a bit too hesitant, which meant I reacted too late. It’s a shame I couldn’t reward all the hard work with a victory, but I’m proud of how we presented ourselves.”
