Vigié sprints to fifth place in second stage Itzulia Women, Reijnhout caught in final meters
Team Visma | Lease a Bike showed its best side in the second stage of Itzulia Women. Rosita Reijnhout and two other riders seemed to be fighting for the victory, but the three were caught by the peloton in the final 500 meters. In the sprint that followed, Margaux Vigié took fifth place.
In the second stage of the Basque stage race, the riders were immediately set to climb. Eva van Agt and Maud Oudeman showed their good legs on the first climbs and were among the best climbers in the race. In the valley everything came together again, after which the riders of Team Visma | Lease a Bike came to the front.
After a brave attempt by Mijntje Geurts, Reijnhout saw her chance to go on the attack. Together with two compatriots, she grabbed a 25-second lead and headed into the final kilometer. In the last 500 meters the trio was caught by the peloton, which resulted in a bunch sprint. Mischa Bredewold again proved to be the strongest. Vigié sprinted to fifth place.
"I am very satisfied with the race we rode today as a team."
"I am very satisfied with the race we rode today as a team", sports director Jan Boven said. "The first 40 kilometers were very tough. Maud and Eva showed uphill that they were among the best twenty riders. Also in the remainder of the stage we did super well. After Mijntje's attack we were ready to try again. Rosita did that brilliantly."
Reijnhout ended up a few hundred meters short of sprinting for the win. "I was really hoping it was going to work out, but you know it's going to be a difficult story when the peloton is coming closer and closer." In the sprint, Vigié achieved another top-five finish. "Yesterday third, today fifth. She's never done that before. Today she started the sprint from a little too far away, but that can happen."
With one day to go, Vigié and Van Agt hold the fourth and seventh place in the standings. According to Boven, anything is still possible. "The classification will go up tomorrow. There is a tough climb at the end and then a fast descent. It would be nice if Eva and Maud are in front at the top. Eva has been ninth here once before, so we will do everything we can to improve on that result."
