Vingegaard ends O Gran Camino in style with third stage win and overall victory

Jonas Vingegaard has won the general classification of O Gran Camino in style. The rider of Jumbo-Visma clocked a time of 23:47 in the final time trial, which was more than enough to win. Rohan Dennis finished second, 35 seconds behind Vingegaard.

Attila Valter missed out on the podium in eighth place, while Vingegaard showed that he can go even faster. At the intermediate checkpoint, the defending Tour de France champion led teammate Dennis by 24 seconds and continued to extend that gap. Vingegaard almost caught Ruben Guerreiro, who started earlier, and convincingly took his third consecutive stage win in the streets of Santiago de Compostela. This brings Vingegaard's season total to four victories. Team Jumbo-Visma now has six wins in 2023.

"It's been a great week for us”, Vingegaard said. "It couldn't have been better. We've won three stages and the overall classification, so I'm really happy. I have a strong desire to win, and my shape is good. We can go home happy. It was the ideal lead-up to Paris-Nice.”

"It was the ideal lead-up to Paris-Nice."

Jonas Vingegaard

Vingegaard was pleased with the Spanish stage race. "O Gran Camino is a great race. Despite the poor weather, I had a fantastic time here. It's a cool race with a challenging course.”

Sports director Frans Maassen was more than happy with his team's performance. "We were hoping for this result. Jonas showed that he is ready for Paris-Nice. It will be a good test against the rest of the world's top riders. Jonas was here to fine-tune. That worked out well. Even though the weather wasn't always ideal, it was still a beautiful race to begin the season. When you need to control the race, it's essential to have seven strong riders with you. We had a good mix of experienced men and young riders. The guys of the development team did a great job and learned a lot.”
