Vingegaard second in queen stage and overall Tirreno classification

Vingegaard second in queen stage and overall Tirreno classification

Jonas Vingegaard has finished second in the sixth stage of Tirreno-Adriatico. After a double climb of the Monte Carpegna, only classification leader Tadej Pogacar proved too good. The Dane’s result also positively impacted his position in the general classification. With one stage to go, he climbed to second place.

Tirreno’s sixth stage was the queen stage. Nine leaders were given a five-minute maximum lead. With the first Monte Carpegna in sight, the gap to the breakaway riders became smaller and smaller.

Vingegaard rode alertly at the front of the peloton throughout the stage and was well protected by his teammates. The first climb of Monte Carpegna separated an already depleted peloton. The 25-year-old Dane crossed the top together with twelve others. During the second climb, Pogacar attacked from the group of favourites, which was enough for victory.

"I’m satisfied with how it went today. And I’m happy that I'm now second in the general classification."

Jonas Vingegaard

The Dane acknowledged that he had achieved the maximum result. “I’m satisfied with how it went. Pogacar was phenomenal. On the climb, he gained a one-minute advantage. When he attacked, I was already on the limit, so I didn’t think about following him. He was just the best today. I’m happy that I'm now second in the general classification. Other than my time trial, I’ve also had a good week. I’m looking forward to tomorrow's stage before I start to think about my next races.”
