Vos sixth in Liège after tough race

Vos sixth in Liège after tough race

Marianne Vos has finished sixth in the fifth women’s edition of Liège-Bastogne-Liège. After a strong performance by the team, Vos had to let go several favourites in the final.

The organisation of the last classic of this spring decided to set out a tough course with seven hills for this lustrum edition. Before the race exploded on the climb of the Redoute, it rained attacks. Anouska Koster showed herself and was in a front group of seven. Moments later, it was up to the favourites on the flanks of the iconic climb.

Vos reacted attentively to attacks by, among others, Anna van der Breggen and Annemiek van Vleuten. A little later Anna Henderson and Riejanne Markus also joined her. This way they could support Vos until the last climb of the day, the Cote de la Roche-Aux-Faucons. Vos found it difficult on the offshoot of the climb and was unable to catch up after several favourites had attacked. In the end she won the sprint of the chasing group. Demi Vollering won the race.

Sports director Marco Postma spoke of a strong performance by his team afterwards. “It went well today. We executed the plan we had drawn up in advance down to the last detail. In the end Marianne was beaten on value, which is a pity. In terms of result, we obviously hoped for more. I am very satisfied with the team performance.”

"We didn’t make any mistakes as a team so in the end we can be satisfied."

Vos herself was disappointed that the spring is over. “That is always a shame. You are into the flow of racing so much that it is a strange feeling that it is over now. Today we did a good race as a team. We were well-positioned. I broke on the last climb. I came back but then I had to let them go. In terms of results, we had hoped for more. We didn’t make any mistakes as a team so in the end we can be satisfied.”
