Green jersey Van Aert bright spot on tough Sunday

Green jersey Van Aert bright spot on tough Sunday

Wout van Aert has won the points classification in the Critérium du Dauphiné. The cyclist from Team Jumbo-Visma had been leading the classification since the third stage. The team’s leader Steven Kruijswijk abandoned the race due to illness. After a day in the attack, Sepp Kuss finished fifth in the last stage of the France stage race.

The bad weather conditions of the past few days had taken their toll on some of our riders. Steven Kruijswijk had to quit the race because he was ill and Van Aert wasn’t feeling well either. In the end, the Belgian rider passed the finish line safely, led by his teammates.

“It’s been a hard day because I was sick this morning”, Van Aert said. “But all I wanted was to complete the stage to be able to keep the green jersey till the end. It’s been a nice week, but now I’m exhausted. The last three days have been long but I overcame the difficulties, although we didn’t experience high altitudes.”

Together with twelve other riders, Kuss chose to attack in the beginning of the stage. On the penultimate climb, he couldn’t follow the decisive attack of the later stage winner Dylan van Baarle and Jack Haigh. In the chasing group, he sprinted to the fifth place.

In Tour de Suisse, the team couldn’t be a part of the game. After a tough stage, only Koen Bouwman finished in the peloton. Danny van Poppel quit the race.
