Groenewegen third in second bunch sprint BinckBank Tour

Dylan Groenewegen has finished in third place during the second bunch sprint of the BinckBank Tour. In Ardooie, the Dutchman was in an ideal position to sprint, but he was unable to take advantage of his good starting position.

Team Jumbo-Visma took the initiative and controlled the stage. The early breakaway was caught in the last five kilometres, after which the team brought Mike Teunissen and Dylan Groenewegen in an ideal position for the sprint. Teunissen started it, but Groenewegen had to watch how both Sam Bennett and Jasper Philipsen were faster today.

“Two people were faster today. Let’s be honest about that”, Jan Boven said. “We were in an ideal position for the sprint and Mike started it very well. The team did a good job by controlling the stage and putting Mike and Dylan where they needed to be for the sprint. We were riding in position all day and we didn’t face any difficulties. Unfortunately, we lost an important pawn with Maarten Wynants.”

The veteran rider crashed badly and had to abandon the race. During the crash he dislocated his shoulder. He was treated in the hospital.
