Peloton surprised by breakaway in Primus Classic

The Primus Classic hasn’t ended in the expected bunch sprint. A breakaway surprised the peloton on the streets of Haacht. Team LottoNL-Jumbo tried hard to close the gap, but failed. As a result, they weren’t able to score a top result.

“For us, it was a difficult race to control”, sports director Frans Maassen said. “Due to a combination of factors, it didn’t come to a sprint finish. The breakaway was very strong, but we also didn’t have too much power ourselves in the final and we had too little support from other teams. With Dylan Groenewegen as the top favourite in the team, it’s obvious the other teams are looking at us. We knew this beforehand. It isn’t ideal, but that’s also cycling. The race itself actually evolved perfectly for us, with a small breakaway that is easy to control normally. We fought for it, but it wasn’t enough to get Dylan in position for the sprint.”
