Dylan Groenewegen: “The Giro d’Italia remains my main goal”

As more and more is becoming clear about the restart of the cycling season, Dylan Groenewegen is also looking forward to the remainder of the season with great confidence. For the 26-year-old resident of Amsterdam, who already won three times this year, the Giro d’Italia remains his main goal. He said this in an interview with Jeroen Stomphorst in Sunday evening’s Studio Sport episode.

“The Giro remains my main goal. In principle, that has not change much compared to the beginning of the season. The whole calendar has been changed and it is going to be three busy months. It remains to be seen in which race I will restart. That will be announced soon.”

Groenewegen will not be able to count on his regular lead-out in the Giro d’Italia. “Normally Mike Teunissen and Amund Jansen are my regular lead-out guys. They will now ride the classics and so my lead-out will be a bit different. I am confident that I can win with these guys as well.”

Groenewegen cannot wait to pin on a bib number again soon. “I am really longing to race again. I am missing it very much. Especially being on the road with the boys, pinning on a number, the racing rhythm, et cetera. We have been lucky that we have always been able to train outside in the Netherlands. And the E-competition of the team was also fun and well organised. That kept me mentally fresh. I have also been busy delivering groceries and analysing my sprints. I am mainly analysing the things that go well, but I also learn from things that don’t go well. I will take my lessons from that. You should always keep fixating at what can be improved. That keeps me sharp and focused to win.”
