Van Aert stops in Houffalize on way to World Championships gravel

All-rounder Wout van Aert will compete in his first gravel race at UCI level in Houffalize on Saturday. The Belgian of Team Jumbo-Visma is taking part in preparation for the gravel world championships, which take place in the Italian region of Veneto on 8 October.

"There are still some nice races this season, like the Tour of Britain and the European Championships in Drenthe. The intention is to finish with the gravel world championships. I find it useful to have done a gravel race before. This is a great opportunity, close to home", Van Aert said about his participation in the Ardennes.

"I've had some rest now, so I'm not in the best shape. But it's nice to test the material and see what a race like this is like. I hope to learn something from the specialists. It's nice to feel how everything works."

The 'World Series' in Houffalize is a qualifying race for the world championships. Van Aert could probably also rely on the national coach to select him for the world championships. "I ride here mainly because I like to race and show myself to my fans and the public. I'm looking forward to the last part of the season, with fun and new races. For example, it's been a long time since I focused on a European Championship. And riding on gravel is something I really enjoy."
