Difficult final day for Team Visma | Lease a Bike in Itzulia Basque Country

Team Visma | Lease a Bike experienced a difficult final day in the Itzulia Basque Country. Sepp Kuss was again part of the breakaway, but could not play a significant role in the battle for the day's victory. Wilco Kelderman didn't manage to maintain his top-ten ranking in the general classification.

In the queen stage of the Basque stage race, the riders faced seven categorised climbs and 3,500 altimeters. Kuss had set his sights on a place in the breakaway and succeeded in his mission. However, the American did not have his best day and was dropped halfway through the stage.

On the slopes of the Izua, Kelderman, who went into the final stage as number six in the general classification, also struggled. He lost contact to the peloton and was unable to get back in the elite group. In the final classification, Kelderman eventually had to settle for 17th place. João Almeida crowned himself winner of the six-day stage race.

"This was not the week we had hoped for", sports director Jesper Mørkøv said. "We started the Itzulia Basque Country with the intention of winning stage wins. After the opening time trial, in which Victor had given everything, we faced some bad luck, including Victor and Axel's crashes. The last few days we switched our attention to the general classification, as Wilco was in good shape. Unfortunately, he didn't have the legs today and missed out on a top classification."
