Gloag proves himself in Tre Valli Varesine with attack in final

Tom Gloag has shown his best side in Tre Valli Varesine. In the Italian semi-classic, the young Briton attacked ten kilometres from the finish. The peloton saw that the attack was not just a pinprick and pulled out all the stops to catch the 21-year-old rider.

It was the second time in a short period that Gloag held his own among the world's top riders. The trainee, who will officially join Team Jumbo-Visma's WorldTour squad in 2023, raced admirably to seventeenth place in the Giro dell'Emilia on Saturday.

"In my opinion, it was a different race from last Saturday", Gloag said. "I felt very strong today. The legs were in good shape. As the race continued, it seemed that the majority of the peloton became more and more exhausted. I still felt quite strong. At ten kilometres from the line, I decided to go for it and attack. Unfortunately, I was unable to stay ahead of the chasing pack. Maybe I could have done it with a few other riders, but it is as it is. Hopefully, this will make me stronger regarding the future."

"I feel very comfortable with this team"

Gloag believes that the future is looking bright. The British racer expressed happiness after his first two races in a Team Jumbo-Visma jersey. "I surprised myself today. It is important for my rhythm that I complete races at this level, and it’s especially good that I can play a role in the final. I feel very comfortable with this team. Last year, I could only dream of working with such a skilled squad and riding with such experienced and strong riders. I am very grateful for that. Even though I still have a ways to go, they won't take this away from me”, Gloag smirked.

Sports director Addy Engels also appreciated Gloag's attack in the race’s closing stages. "It demonstrated guts as well as strong legs. Nice to see that. In Emilia, we were already excited about his performance. Today we are again. So the first impressions are very positive. He is very enthusiastic and eager to learn. However, the most important thing is that he continues to work hard in the coming years to develop himself. We shall assist him in this endeavor as well as we can. Tom is a rider who has a lot to contribute."
