Markus and Vos settle into top ten Strade Bianche

Markus and Vos settle into top ten Strade Bianche

Riejanne Markus and Marianne Vos finished seventh and ninth, respectively, in Strade Bianche. The two Team Visma | Lease a Bike riders showed themselves several times in the race but ultimately fell short of a podium place in the final.

The 10th edition of the Italian spring classic remained closed for a long time despite several attack attempts. On the first passage of the Colle Pinzuto, the first leading group emerged with eleven riders in it, including Markus. Behind the leaders, on the eighth strip of the day, Le Tolfe, the race ignited. Lotte Kopecky pulled the throttle and managed to create an elite group, including Vos.

At twenty kilometers from the finish line, a merge occurred between the leading group and the thinned-out peloton. On the final gravel strip of the race, Vos and Markus fought for what they were worth but fell just short of being able to go with the best. Kopecky finally got the win in Piazza del Campo.

"As a team, we rode a very good race"

Riejanne Markus

The 29-year-old Markus looks back with satisfaction on today's team performance. "As a team, we rode a very good race. We managed to get into the leading group, and then the cooperation in the group was very good. The final was just too much for me, but I am proud of the team's performance. We did very well together.”

Vos shares her teammate's opinion but is also realistic about her performance. "We rode well as a team today. The big breakaway made the race extra tough. Fortunately, we had Riejanne as a key player in the breakaway. I was just not good enough today, but overall, we can look back with contentment.”

"A seventh and ninth place is an excellent performance"

Jos van Emden

Sport director Jos van Emden is also satisfied with the riders' performance. "A seventh and ninth place is an excellent performance. The weather conditions of the past few days made it a very tough race. Riejanne rode a good final, and the fighter in Marianne came out again."
