Nordhagen second in final stage and general classification O Gran Camiño
Jørgen Nordhagen secured his second place in the overall standings of O Gran Camiño. In the demanding final stage, the 21-year-old Norwegian from Team Visma | Lease a Bike finished second in a sprint among the general classification favorites.
On the final day of the five-day Spanish stage race, a tough stage was still on the program. The riders faced 155 kilometers, with the steep Alto Monte Santa Trega in the finale. Nordhagen started the final stage in second place overall.
The race opened up on the Alto da Valga, the penultimate climb of the day. Just over twenty kilometers from the finish, the last early breakaway riders were caught by the peloton. Driven by Team Visma | Lease a Bike, the peloton was then further reduced. Heading into the finale, the group kept getting smaller. Nordhagen still had teammate Tijmen Graat with him on the way to Alto Monte Santa Trega.
On the steep final climb, an elite group broke away from the rest. In the end, Nordhagen only had to concede to Alessandro Pinarello. Race leader Adam Yates finished third. In the overall standings, Nordhagen secured second place.
"I’m ending this week with a good feeling"
“It’s great to finish this week on the podium,” Nordhagen said afterward. “It was a tough stage to close out the race, but we were well prepared. The guys did an excellent job throughout the stage, allowing me to start the finale as fresh as possible. In the final kilometer, Pinarello made a very strong move. I tried to follow, but second place was the best possible result for me today. I’m ending this week with a good feeling. I’m looking forward to La Flèche Wallonne and the Tour de Romandie.”
