Oomen keeps classification ambitions alive in rainy second stage Tour de Suisse

Sam Oomen has managed to keep his plans for a good classification alive in the Tour de Suisse. In the second stage, which was marked by bad weather, the Dutchman finished in the chasing group, 22 seconds behind day winner Mathieu van der Poel.

Four riders created a breakaway group in the opening phase of the stage. The quartet managed to build up a lead of six minutes. After 100 kilometres, when the first hills came in sight, the peloton increased the tempo. Before the final climb, all the leaders were caught. At about thirty kilometres before the finish the peloton broke up. On behalf of Team Jumbo-Visma, Oomen and Mike Teunissen were in the front group.

A number of strong men then took the lead and attacked on the steep slopes of the final climb. Teunissen had to let go. Oomen in turn was able to hold to a group of pursuers. In the general classification Oomen is 25th after the second stage.

"For Sam, this is a result he can live with."

Frans Maassen

Sports director Frans Maassen had seen that the riders had to deal with tough conditions today. “The weather was not kind to the peloton today. It was really hard work. I think the final result reflects the right proportions. The best riders were in front and battled for the win. For Sam, this is a result he can live with. We were hoping to sprint with Mike, but we soon found out the final climb was too steep for him.”
