Team Visma | Lease a Bike does not get to sprint in chaotic second stage La Vuelta Femenina

The second stage of La Vuelta Femenina had a chaotic ending. On the wet Spanish roads, crashes dominated the final kilometers. As a result, Marianne Vos on behalf of Team Visma | Lease a Bike couldn’t sprint in the finish street.

The troops of Team Visma | Lease a Bike took control during the stage. On the only climb of the day, the black-and-yellow formation took the lead and maintained a high pace. This caused several favorites for the stage win to fall behind. Vos was guided into an excellent position towards the final kilometers, until several crashes disrupted the plans.

Vos was involved in a crash, losing her speed as a result. The former world champion quickly resumed the race, but never managed to regain that ideal position again. Teammate Anna Henderson also fell and had to be taken to the hospital for examination after the stage.

"Thanks to our efforts along the way, we created an excellent position for ourselves"

Rutger Tijssen

"The stage went perfectly for us until three kilometers from the finish,” explained team director Rutger Tijssen. “Thanks to our efforts along the way, we created an excellent position for ourselves. Unfortunately, Marianne and Anna were involved in a crash in the finale. As a result, our whole plan fell apart. These kinds of crashes are common in the early days of a grand tour. Everyone is still fresh and eager to perform. It's disappointing for now, but we can’t blame ourselves. We’ll fight again in the coming days."
