Tulett shows himself in the battle for a podium in fast edition of Liège–Bastogne–Liège
Ben Tulett finished 13th in Liège–Bastogne–Liège. The young Brit impressed during the demanding hilly phase and remained in contention for a podium place for a long time. Tadej Pogacar soloed through the streets of Liège to take the victory.
In the 112th edition of Liège–Bastogne–Liège, the race opened up early. The peloton split into two groups, with Menno Huising managing to position himself in the front group. The breakaway built up a solid lead, but did not play a decisive role in the battle for victory.
On the Côte de la Redoute, the final was blown wide open. Tulett fought bravely, but was ultimately unable to follow the top favourites Pogacar and Paul Seixas. While Pogacar rode solo to victory, the young Brit battled in the chasing group for a podium place and eventually crossed the line in 13th position.
"I’m happy that I was able to fight for a strong result in a Monument"
“From the start it was a really tough race,” Tulett reflected. “The pace was extremely high all day. On the Côte de la Redoute I was well positioned, but there were simply two riders who were clearly the strongest. After that I fought in the chase for a good result, but unfortunately I lost out in the sprint. I’m disappointed, but that’s part of racing. I’m happy that I was able to fight for a strong result in a Monument.”
Sports director Maarten Wynants was also satisfied with the team’s performance. “We rode a strong race today with Ben. We were aiming for a top-ten finish, but unfortunately we just missed out. All in all, we can be satisfied, especially considering where we stood last week after the Amstel Gold Race.”
