Veenhoven tenth in Scheldeprijs

Veenhoven tenth in Scheldeprijs

Nienke Veenhoven crossed the finish line in tenth place in the Scheldeprijs. The Belgian classic ended, as expected, in a mass sprint in which the Dutch rider also got involved in the sprint. Lorena Wiebes ultimately proved to have the best legs in the streets of Schoten.

The fourth edition of the Scheldeprijs remained closed for a long time. After 60 kilometers, in rainy conditions, one rider managed to create a small gap, before being joined by one co-rider at 35 kilometers from the finish. In the last local lap, two kilometers before the finish, the two riders were caught. Veenhoven was in a good position in the final kilometer but fell short of a podium place. Wiebes won the Scheldeprijs for the fourth time.

Sport director Jos van Emden looks back on today realistically. "The goal was to sprint with Nienke, and that worked out. But there was no support during the sprint, and that's a shame. This is an important point of focus because at the moment we are not yet at the desired level. We know the riders can do it, so hopefully things will improve in the upcoming bunch sprints.”

"The bond with the riders is very good"

Jos van Emden

The 39-year-old Dutchman, after a long career as a cyclist, has finished his first races as a team leader with Team Visma | Lease a Bike Women. "It suits me super well. We have already shown great results in the first weeks of the season, and the bond with the riders is very good. Hopefully, we will continue this line and show great things this season."
