Vingegaard impresses with another stage win in queen stage Tirreno - Adriatico

Vingegaard impresses with another stage win in queen stage Tirreno - Adriatico

Jonas Vingegaard has seized power in Tirreno – Adriatico. In the queen stage, the 27-year-old Dane again proved a size too strong for his competitors. The GC leader made the difference on the tough final climb of Monte Petrano. With only the final sprint stage to go, the overall victory in the Race of the Two Seas seems a certainty.

During the penultimate stage, the riders faced 3,500 altimeters. The final climb of Monte Petrano was the focal point. Along the way, nine strong riders formed the early breakaway. Team Visma | Lease a Bike, serving GC leader Vingegaard, took control in the peloton to keep the gap small. Once at the foot of the final climb, the escapees were caught by the group of favourites.

Vingegaard, Juan Ayuso and Jai Hindley eventually stood out from the rest. After several attack attempts among the three favourites, the Team Visma | Lease a Bike leader launched the decisive attack with five kilometres to go. Vingegaard systematically built his lead and he reached the finish line solo to take his second stage win in a row.

"We can speak of a perfect week for the team"

Jonas Vingegaard

"It was great to get the second win," said the Dane. "On the road, the team again did a fantastic job to bring me in a good position to the foot of the final climb. On that climb, Bora - Hansgrohe maintained a very high pace, which was not to my disadvantage. Hindley tried to attack a few times, after which I finally decided to go myself. After that it was a time trial to the finish."

"With two stage wins, we can speak of a perfect week for the team. Tomorrow it's a matter of reaching the finish line safely to secure the overall victory as well. I am very satisfied with how my feeling was during this round. I am in better shape than last season at this time," Vingegaard concluded.

Team Visma | Lease a Bike's victory counter in 2024 reached 13 after this victory. On Sunday, the flat final stage in San Benedetto del Tronto awaits.
