Vingegaard wins second stage in a row and extends his lead in the overall classification

Jonas Vingegaard has won for the second day in a row in the Spanish stage race O Gran Camino. On the final climb of the day, Vingegaard rode away from the group of favourites. The Dane of Team Visma | Lease a Bike grabbed a lead of around 30 seconds and did not relinquish it.

The third stage of O Gran Camino promised to be another very tough one. After ten kilometres, the first climb was already on the programme. It looked like an early breakaway would emerge there and it eventually did. Indeed, it was Vingegaard, the leader of the general classification, who broke the race open.

"Carapaz was the one who started attacking after the mountain sprint," Vingegaard stressed afterwards. "We had a nice gap pretty quickly and the collaboration was excellent. I definitely gave it a chance and would see what it would bring in the end," the Dane said.

"The guys kept the breakaway group nicely within range. I ventured to attack and luckily was able to keep my lead until the finish."

Vingegaard and co eventually took a lead of around 30 seconds, but the peloton managed to bring back the group that also included Bernal and Gaudu.

Vingegaard's hunger proved far from over. On the final climb of the day he attacked again and rode alone towards the remaining stage leader. He managed to leave him behind as well and so the Dane rode solo to another win in this edition of O Gran Camino.

"It was another very tough day. The guys did an excellent job of keeping the leading group within shot. Then I took the risk to attack and luckily I was able to keep my lead until the finish," said a satisfied Vingegaard.

A final difficult stage is scheduled for tomorrow. Despite the big lead, Vingegaard remains wary. "It's another tough ride. We will have to come up with a good plan to stay out of trouble. It is the last stage so we will do everything we can to secure the jersey," the Dane concluded. Cian Uijtdebroeks continues to hold the white jersey. Vingegaard now holds the points and mountain jersey in addition to the leader's jersey.
