Vos sprints to second place in third stage Tour de France Femmes

Marianne Vos put in a strong sprint in the streets of Montignac-Lascaux, but the 36-year-old Dutchwoman ultimately had to concede to European champion Lorena Wiebes.

Team Jumbo-Visma Women started the third stage of the Tour de France Femmes without Eva van Agt. The 26-year-old rider suffered a bruised lung, a concussion and some abrasions in a crash in stage two. Van Agt returned to the Netherlands today to recover.

The peloton headed for Montignac-Lascaux in the Dordogne region. Coryn Labecki showed her attacking spirit along the way. The American rider of Team Jumbo-Visma twice tried to attack the solo leader Kathrin Hammes. An alert peloton caught both riders moments later. Finally, the sprinters' teams almost misjudged an extended solo by Julie Van de Velde. The Belgian was caught in the final metres by the oncoming peloton. Vos then showed that she had a solid final sprint in her legs. After a sprint duel with Wiebes and Lotte Kopecky, she finished second.

"I noticed that Wiebes was passing me with more speed. Then you know it's going to be difficult"

"I had a fantastic lead-out with Anna (Henderson)", Vos said. "She guided me perfectly through the peloton in the last kilometres. That put me in a perfect position for the sprint. Although I immediately noticed that Wiebes was passing me with more speed. Then you know it's going to be difficult. The only thing you can do is to keep pedaling until the line.

"On the one hand, I can reflect on a good result today, although you always go for the highest achievable. It is not easy to win a Tour stage. It remains the biggest cycling event of the season. Now it is important to recover well from another tough stage. Then hopefully, we can continue to fight for the win", Vos concluded.
