Team Jumbo-Visma finishes Catalunya’s first stage in the peloton

Team Jumbo-Visma has finished the first stage of the Vuelta a Catalunya without any difficulties. In the difficult opening stage in and around Calella, the team of Frans Maassen and Merijn Zeeman crossed the finish line in the belly of the peloton at 2.42 from stage winner Thomas De Gendt. Team leader Steven Kruijswijk was well surrounded by his teammates and rode very attentively all day long.

“The day went as planned for us”, Maassen said. “It was a difficult stage with a lot of climbing. A leading group rode away fairly early with De Gendt as the deserved winner. Behind De Gendt it was especially important not to lose too much time regarding the GC. Tomorrow there is a similar stage in which I expect that it will be a sprint. As of Wednesday, it’s up to the GC riders as we hit the big mountains.”
