Bennett as second overall to final stage Vuelta a Burgos

Bennett as second overall to final stage Vuelta a Burgos

George Bennett has retained his second place overall after the fourth stage in the Vuelta a Burgos. In the stage won by Sam Bennett, the leader of Team Jumbo-Visma reached the finish unscathed. In the overall standings Bennett is eighteen seconds behind Remco Evenepoel, with the final stage to the top of the Lagunas de Neila coming up tomorrow.

The stage was controlled by the sprinter teams from the start and the early breakaway got chased down in the final. Team Jumbo-Visma remained grouped around Bennett and managed to keep their leader out of trouble. A puncture in the last two kilometres ruined Timo Roosen’s sprint chances.

Sports director Frans Maassen had seen a very strong team. “It was an easy stage for the guys. They were well positioned in the front and they protected George very well all day. It was very hot, so you had to keep drinking and cooling. The plan was to go for the sprint with Timo, but he punctured with two kilometres to go. Then it was all over. George also got impeded by a crash in the last kilometre, but didn’t crash himself. Also my compliments to the young Finn Fisher-Black. He did a good job and has been riding very strong all week. ”

Tomorrow is the final stage to the top of the Lagunas de Neila. A stage where Maassen certainly sees opportunities. “We will see what is in store for us tomorrow and whether we can still try something. The morale is good in the team and George is very strong.”
