De Vries battles to fourth place after tough finale in third stage of Tour of Britain
Femke de Vries finished fourth after a short but grueling third stage of the Tour of Britain. On the steep final climb of the Great Orme, the 32-year-old climber from Team Visma | Lease a Bike finished 21 seconds behind stage winner Kim Le Court-Pienaar.
Day three featured the shortest stage of the week. The peloton set off from Mold for a 105-kilometer race through Wales. Along the way, the riders faced three categorized climbs, including the final ascent of the Great Orme.
After the start, no one made a move to establish the breakaway of the day. As a result, the entire peloton reached the foot of the first categorized climb of the day, Moel Fodair. The ascent of Nebo followed shortly afterward. Both climbs significantly reduced the size of the peloton, but De Vries remained attentive and well positioned throughout.
The peloton then moved at a high pace toward the Great Orme. A chasing group including Imogen Wolff managed to rejoin the peloton. Wolff then made sure De Vries was in a good position to begin the steep final climb.
Le Court-Pienaar was the first to accelerate from the foot of the Great Orme. No one could follow her pace, and she eventually rode solo to the stage victory. De Vries crossed the finish line in fourth, 21 seconds behind the Mauritian champion. In the general classification, De Vries moves up to fifth place.
"Kim was simply too strong today on this climb, which was a true test"
“It was incredibly tough,” Femke de Vries said afterwards. “In the opening phase, I tried to stay as calm as possible with the difficult finale in mind. On the approach to the foot of the Great Orme, Imogen did a great job of moving me up the field. It was full gas from the bottom, and I also had to avoid a crash. Kim was simply too strong today on this climb, which was a true test. I really enjoyed this stage and I can be happy with this result.”
